I am so excited you stopped by (so is Little Man)…
I started this blog to chronicle my family’s funny moments and the journey we are on to claim back our house and turn it into a beautifully organized home. I have always been a very organized mom but I will admit our house has taken a back seat to our very busy life and it’s showing the neglect!
As you can see…
How It All Started, You Ask?
Before we can fix any problem we need to know how it all started.
The first 13 years of our marriage I was a SAHM raising our 3 rug-rats … I mean (cough, cough), children (The Graduate, Middle Man and Little Man, you can meet them here). Our house was always clean, pretty and organized. Once Little Man started school full-time Mr. Man and I decided I should enter the land of the working mom’s. That was 2008!
The first couple of years I could barely hold my head above water. Trying to navigate the working world and the mom world was not as easy as I thought. I put on a brave face (facebook perfect face 🙂 ) while our lives became crazy busy and our home became very low on the priority list. I spent the first few years finding very creative ways to “hide and stash” the piles of stuff we accumulated like the cupboard no one goes in, the linen closet (there’s a post in the making) or under the stairs. Our home took a back seat to our uber scheduled life and transformed into a house where we just dumped our stuff and ran back out the door to the next activity. Can you relate? Please say I was not the only one who hid their crap before company came over!
It started with not paying attention to where things went. Not tossing things away or recycling things that should be. Buying another Rubbermaid bin just to hide more stuff (that was my favorite trick) or piling stuff in a closet and saying to myself, “I will get to it later” (second favorite…lol). This was my solution to avoid the huge amount of STUFF we accumulated!

Now What? How Do I Tackle This Mess!
Now that we have established that my house is full of dumping zones and showing its neglect, I needed to figure out how I was going to tackle it, especially when the task seemed enormous. Kinda like climbing Mt. Everest with a vacuum cleaner, label maker, and Swiffer duster!
I decided to start to tackle this house once and for all but didn’t have the first clue where to start. What I did know was that I was tired of spending so much time looking for stuff we already had or spending all my energy relocating the stuff from one room to another (I had this mastered!). Every corner, closet, and cupboard needed my attention.
Then I started to feel overwhelmed by it all. I am sure many of you can relate to this, please know you aren’t alone. Even those among us that are naturally organized and clean struggle with feelings of claustrophobia from all the stuff we have accumulated.
That’s when I grabbed pen and paper and started with creating a list of all the spaces that bugged me the most. Problem with this list was it ended up being every space in my home (Yikes!). So that maybe wasn’t the right approach to this mammoth task.
Then I went to Pinterest and started searching ideas for getting organized. I have a love-hate relationship with Pinterest. Don’t we all? Anyway, the problem with that was there was so much out there and I still didn’t know where to start. So many of the pins were of spaces that were “Perfect Pinterest Pictures” (the 3 dreaded P’s) and that is NOT my house! It was not perfect or picture worthy and definitely not Pinterest worthy (how is that even possible, right!?).
Then came the AHHH HAAA moment! The light bulb went off!!! I felt like a cartoon character. I was so excited to have a direction!

The Inspiration, The AHH HAA Moment that Started a Movement!
I stumbled on a book that changed my perception of clutter and how to tackle it once and for all. I read the book so fast that Mr. Man was preparing for a storm! I kept spewing quotes and ideas at him, probably to warn him to get ready. I couldn’t contain my excitement, I was vibrating! Things started to make so much more sense. I full of ideas and new inspiration.
The book was The Life-Changing Method of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and it completely inspired me to jump in with my label maker in hand and get cracking on getting rid of our crap…I mean… unwanted stuff for good!
I love the idea of tackling our cancerous clutter once and for all. Maybe the idea of only doing this once (and for all) is what sold me or maybe it was the concept of only keeping what you truly love. Either way, I am excited to try the KonMari Method one category at a time.
I definitely feel like I am surrounded by STUFF. Stuff that we don’t need, stuff that is old and falling apart or just too much stuff. If I couldn’t find it I just went out and bought it again, sound familiar? Anyway…

I will say there were some parts of her book that I just couldn’t relate to or that didn’t make sense for our family but the point is that I was inspired to tackle this monstrosity once and for all. It gave me a starting point. The idea of tackling things by category really struck a chord with me!
The Plan to Rid Our House of the Cancerous Clutter
Our kids are getting older which means they need their momma less and less ( 🙁 insert tears) so I have all kinds of free time now (sshh, don’t tell anyone…lol) and I can start to focus on claiming back our home and putting my energy back into what I love… CREATING and ORGANIZING with a side of CLEANING!
I am going to embark on this next chapter with my trusty label maker!
My mission is to turn this tired house into a beautifully organized HOME once again… and this blog is my way to express my creative side and chronicle this new journey. I figured if I was struggling with this problem some of you probably are too, so why not share my journey? I don’t know about you but when I look for inspiration I am often met with pictures and ideas that just don’t fit or work for me so I figured I was not the only one. Hopefully, I can show you a few new ideas to tackle your space.
I have decided to tackle my house one category/space at a time and thought I would bring you along for the ride! Yeah, You!! I can’t promise we won’t take a side street once in a while but hopefully, I can inspire you to claim back your home and tackle the same challenges. I WILL promise you that I will be honest and show you real-life solutions (not perfect Pinterest picture ideas).
Truth Bomb! Not all my pictures will be Pinterest worthy 🙂 and I don’t live in a perfect house. My closets are tiny (when I say tiny I mean you can’t fit a box of cereal in my pantry, small!) and so is my house.
If you’re ready to tackle your house and reclaim it one space at a time follow these 5 steps to get started:
- Figure out how you got here. Ask yourself what brought you to feel this way and not care about your stuff?
- Make the decision to get started!
- Find inspiration, consider reading The Life-Changing Method of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering or some other book or magazine.
- Find someone to make you accountable or help you on this journey. Sign up to MLO Community for inspiration and help on your journey. If you need someone to hold you accountable I can be that friend for you!
- Start your journey by starting small! Pick a drawer or a shelf if you are feeling overwhelming. The idea is to just get started 🙂
